Sherlock Holmes

sherlock_holmes_downey_jr_posterI loved the newest addition of Sherlock Holmes. I think they gave a face lift to the somewhat stuffy image of him. Robert Downey Jr. was amazing and brought the character fully to life, along with Jude Law as the beloved Watson.

I’m not sure how they did it, but they made the movie feel fresh and worn at the same time. Like a very crisp sepia photograph, but instead of brown, everything was gray. Seems like this could become a series in the way that James Bond comes out with a new movie every few years. And it’s good to see Guy Richie back in action.

Bad Lieutenant (2009)

blHated it. Was so bored, wanted it to end. And Val Kilmer was totally underused. How did Nicolas Cage become bigger and more present than Val? And, yeah, cool, you see what he sees when he’s high, but I think the only cool part was when the soul was still dancing.

Avatar

avatar-poster-neytiriLoved the scenery and the abundance of nature. All the bio-fluorescence, especially the face freckles. The story was interesting, nothing new or over the top, but I liked the message and all the scenery.

I was a little annoyed with all the stereotypical cliches of what indigenous or native peoples are like. Long braids, primitive, loin clothes. Do people who are connected to nature have to be like that? It was like he took a fusion of Native Indians and African tribes, combined them and painted them blue.

Seeing it in IMAX 3D was definitely worth it. Save up all those Scene points. And I think Sam Worthington is amazing, especially when he isn’t playing anything human.

Girlfriend Material

Common teen romance. But I like how a lot of these books, especially Sarah Dessen’s books, urge readers to stand up for what you want, to have courage and to be honest. I think that’s what makes people gravitate to these kinds of stories, the bare human emotion of being afraid to be honest and reaping the rewards once you do. But not all stories are happy endings, just usually the ones you get in teen fiction.

Invictus

invictus_posterAmazing to think that a game can bring a nation together. That if you can get everyone to love the same thing, to support the same thing, that you can bring people together. Almost without them even realizing it. I really liked the perspective of this film, that even a great man like Mandela needed a little help. A lot of help.

It makes me think of that whole idea that people need a little luck in this world to succeed. But they need a whole lot of effort to get to a place where luck can change the world.

Objectified

objectified-posterBeginner’s guide to Industrial Design. It was nice to see some designers I’ve never heard of, but overall, it’s a very basic and fundamental portrayal of industrial designers and what they do. And I guess I all learned about my profession from this movie, is that we’re a scattered bunch, each moving in the direction of our own definition of what we do and who we do it for.

Zach and Miri Make a Porno

zach_miriTPL DVD: Fun, raunchy humor. I like the guy flicks genre. You see a guy’s perspective of true love and romance. Enjoyable, especially with Jay making a comeback.

The Young Victoria

young_victoria_ver5It’s always good to learn history through beautiful people. I thought the movie was a bit choppy. And even though I love Emily Blunt, I didn’t think she was as strong as she’s been in other movies like Sunshine Cleaning or The Devil Wears Prada. But it must have been a rare gift, in the midst of arranged royal weddings, to marry the one you love.
