TPL DVD: I’ve had this on hold for a long time and I finally got it. Hmm, I’d have to say it wasn’t really worth the wait. But it was enjoyable towards the end.
I thought overall it was a little too much like Equilibrium. Or too much like all the other futuristic utopia movies. Charlize Theron was too sexy (really, in the future are we going to dress like that?) and she just happened to have a little eye dropper in her shoe? The twist about sterility and cloning was interesting and it was nice to think that over time humanity would be able to heal itself. That if anything happened, eventually, we would be able to kind of fix ourselves. This especially in light of all the toxic and chemical influence on our bodies everyday. But otherwise, I felt the movie was a bit flat and at points boring.
TPL DVD: Pretty much what I thought this movie would be like. It was comical in that over the top style of Steve Carrell and clever in the style of Tina Fey. But love it I did not.
I guess you really do have to keep a relationship fresh, from falling into repetition. And while I don’t mind the repetition too much (we’ve had a pretty quite life since we got married), I do want to always find a way to connect with one another. Whether that’s a regular date night or a spontaneous adventure, I think it’s important to remember that like any relationship, marriage has to be tended to.
TPL DVD: I just have to say it again, I love the TPL. Has a great selection for the public and they deliver! Maybe not to your door like Netflix in the States, but to any other library branch that you should choose. And you know what, it’s all free. Except of course when I can’t get my act together and end up paying late fees, but even then, oh well, it goes back into the system.
G and I have been wanting to watch this for awhile. Especially with all the Golden Globes and Oscar buzz that it got with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. They were great. What I liked about their performance is that about 5 minutes into the movie, you kind of forgot that they were gay and that this family was unconventional. Because their problems were so conventional. I think in every relationship, you have someone who dominates and someone who tries a little more to do the pleasing. And in some cases, those roles can flip flop depending on the circumstance or context. And because they were both female, you kind of didn’t assume that the dominate one was the male.
And it was pretty amazing to see someone so judgmental and critical. I think we all kind of have that part in us, the one that likes to criticize everything else and everyone else. Sometimes this can be mistaken for gossip… But it must be hard to live a life with someone you never really feel has your back, someone you have to be so perfect around all the time. It was nice to see how Nic started to realize that her judging and criticism was getting in the way of her relationship with her family.
TPL DVD: This reminded me a lot of The Peaceful Warrior. Even the actors looked a lot alike.
I guess all it really meant to me though was a kind of cool reflection on the everyday gifts we have in this life. The ones that we may overlook or take for granted. Maybe a little bit too much of a cliche. But it was really enjoyable to see this guy change over the course of each gift. Lose that sense of entitlement and gain a sense of gratitude. No life is perfect, but perfection is maybe doing the best with what you have.
TPL DVD: I wonder why the Holocaust has such a hold on us. There are as many horrific things that continue to happen every day, yet they’re never spoken of or depicted in a film. Yet, year after year, we continue to depict the horrors of the Holocaust.
It was a pretty surprising ending. I have to say I didn’t really see it coming. And you have to wonder what happens to that family afterward? Do they change the way they think about the Jews? Now that the evil and hatred they have for them has consumed one of their own? I kept thinking that they might get there in time. I guess I wish they would have filled in a bit more, not made it such a dramatic ending, but left us with the reality of after.
I usually like to use the visual for the respective format. But I just like the movie poster so much more than the DVD.
Wow, talk about making a movie about product placement and then crashing it with products all over the place. I feel like our North American lives have become all about lifestyle and less about life itself. Everybody looks happy, but they’re all looking for something. I used to think that popularity contests ended once you graduated from high school. And maybe if you went to a small college, well, you might get some there too. But I never imagined all of North America to be one big popularity contest and products to be the center of it all. But I feel like we all just traded one Prom Queen in for the next as we progressed into bigger and bigger ponds.
I remember reading the book Branded a few years ago. The author commented on how some companies that sell products to teens (who have the most expendable cash flow) have skipped most mainstream advertising techniques completely and now use popular high schoolers to sell things to their peers. So, instead of paying for ad space in Teen Vogue, they buy popular kids all across the country the new it thing and then get them to pounce around their peers (who want to be like them). Basically, what this movie is about. It’s pretty fascinating when you think about it.
But the whole time, while watching this movie, all I could think about is, no way, people just aren’t that stupid and needy are they? But then there are the Ed and Angela’s out there in the world and all the fancy show homes. Everybody trying to impress everyone with what they have. So I guess it’s not that unfathomable. I guess it really would work.
G and I watched this to get us in the mood and kind of excited for what’s going to be our little experience in less than 9 months. I actually thought that it’d get me super pumped up, but in the end I thought it was just a little overwhelming.
I liked Bayar the most. He was a cute little guy who liked to get into trouble. Plus he was always smiling!
TPL DVD: Pretty boring stuff. It took me awhile to get into it. Reminded me a lot of The A-Team without the funny. I like movies that actually end, not set themselves up for a sequel (that usually never happens). I feel like most of these movies are a little too optimistic and hope that there’ll be enough money to warrant more.
